What is your name?

Hi, my name is Gemma Baker.

Describe yourself in 3 to 5 words.

Mummy to two amazing girls.

What is your attitude towards sun protection today?

I am very wary about the extreme UV levels here in Australia, having just moved from the UK where it isn’t such an issue. My daughters are fair in complexion so I do what I can to protect them.

Having been told when I was younger that I have skin that would easily develop skin cancer, I’m extremely cautious. I use factor 50 on myself and my family, I try to use natural products to reduce the chemicals we’re exposed to as the need for protection is high.

I have a handy app which tells me the UV levels for the day and suggests the protection required. I find myself checking this throughout the day.

What would you tell your 16-year-old self about sun protection?

I would tell my 16 year old self, to not be silly and always use suncream and to realise one application is not enough, you need to reapply regularly. Also I’d tell myself that sun burn hurts! A lot!

Thank you Gemma for helping raise awareness for skin cancer, melanoma and skin conditions, and sharing your story with us and our Solbari Community.
